Meet Rehan Munir: The viral Pakistani doctor model
“Life is like football; you need goals!” reads an Instagram post by Rehan Munir, one of Pakistan’s newest and hottest models who happens to be a medical doctor (MD) by profession. Also a soccer freak, who has confessed to having “major withdrawal symptoms” if so much as a day goes by without a game, Munir’s photos (on Instagram) almost always have him playing with a football, even while roaming the streets in Manhattan.
Another constant in the pictures is his broad, ear-to-ear smile.
Munir shot into limelight sometime last year, interestingly enough, after he posted on a Facebook group that he was looking for a rental in Brooklyn. He had just started a rotation at a local hospital. His photograph, coupled with brief personal details, instantly broke the internet, as they say; with visitors to his post going gaga over his good looks, some even proposing to him straight-up. (For the record, this 27-year-old is still single.)
New York Post featured him sporting his medical gear (the steth and scrubs) as well as a football — his staple ‘accessory.’
His Instagram followers multiplied overnight. His popularity reached Pakistan also, and he was approached by several modelling agencies, some of which he went on to collaborate with. In an interview with Gulf News tabloid!, in his hometown Lahore, Munir talks about his student days at Aga Khan University, Karachi, a prospective acting assignment, and why he hasn’t walked the runway yet. Excerpts follow.
From your social media posts, you appear to be travelling a lot. You also seem to be the happy-go-lucky type. Is that a fair conclusion to make?
I’m travelling mostly for work. For instance, I did month-long rotations [in hospitals] in Denver, Santiago, and New York City each. I’m going back to the US for residency. I just took my USMLE [United States Medical Licensing Examination] for the purpose. Later, I’d be eligible for further specialisation. I want to do sports medicine.
Yes, I think I’m the happy-go-lucky kind but let me warn you: whatever you see on social media profiles doesn’t really represent all of you.
Are you Insta-crazed?
Haha, you can say that.
Who takes such great photos for you in the streets?
It’s either my friends or the people who approach me because they want to collaborate [with me for modelling assignments].
Again, judging from your profile pictures, you seem to carry a football everywhere you go. Comment.
I actually do. [Laughs.] Also, when I’m visiting a new place, I feel compelled to check out if there’s any football ground around.
Another constant is your smile.
I’m actually a very camera-shy person. So, the easiest thing for me to do [when posing for a click] is to put on a smile. Even I’m modelling I’m not the sort who would pull off ‘poses’.
Tell us about your major modelling campaigns.
I recently did a TVC for Samsung mobile. Earlier, I’ve modelled for Pakistani brands such as Almas, Outfitters, and Hush Puppies.
Do you have a personal favourite clothing brand?
I’d say Zara. But I am not the crazy, high-street fashion guy. I follow trends but I try something if it fits my body type well.
You haven’t walked the ramp yet, have you?
No, I haven’t. I’ve been offered to, but nothing materialised.
Do you plan to get into acting sometime?
Let’s see. Right now I am focused on starting residency in the US. I’ll take up any fair opportunity that comes along, provided if does not compromise my medical profession.
Lastly, how come you are still single?
Well, I think I am [single] because I already have a lot on my plate right now, and also I’ll commit when I feel the time is right.
