Why #FreeBritney is trending again

Why #FreeBritney is trending again

Singer Britney Spears, who has been under a conservatorship since 2008 after suffering mental health issues, is possibly seeing light at the end of a very long tunnel as fans rally to free her from the allegedly manipulative arrangement.

A conservatorship is a concept whereby a guardian manages financial affairs and aspects of daily life of a person who has physical or mental restrictions.

Britney Spears' fans are increasingly demanding that she be released from the conservatorship, which they feel is being used to manipulate Spears' considerable fortune - she is worth around $59 million according to court documents filed in 2018.

A #FreeBritney campaign is trending again, and in the latest development on the issue, Britney Spears' mother Lynne Spears, 65, is believed to have put in a request to be included in any 'special notice' of all matters regarding her daughter's finances.

According to a report in Daily Mail, Britney's mother Lynne took an interest in her daughter's situation last May when she attended a conservatorship status hearing, which Britney was also present at. At that time fans noticed that Lynne had supported and 'liked' comments from social media accounts that believed Britney was being held against her will.

Lynne was supportive of the Free Britney hashtag, alleging Britney's team was 'deleting positive comments on her Instagram post and leaving negative ones to keep up the illusion that she needs help!'

The singer has never gone public about the arrangement, which gave her father Jamie the power to manage her assets, along with an attorney. Jamie Spears stepped down in September 2019 saying he had health issues. Britney's long time care manager Jodi Montgomery stepped in as the new conservator.

The arrangement had been extended until August 22, and with the date nearing, fans are accelerating the #FreeBritney movement. Many claim some of her Instagram videos and messages are coded cries for help.

And according to Cosmopolitan, Britney's former photographer Andrew Gallery, is allegedly in possession of a 2008 letter she wrote about her conservatorship and ex-husband Kevin Federline. Taking to TikTok in a series of videos called 'MY TIME WITH: @britneyspears', he claims that Britney wanted this letter read out to her fans. The authenticity of this letter has not been proved.

Is Britney crying out for help? Will she be free of her conservatorship soon and be allowed to run her own life? As fans, we hope so.
