Drunk woman gets jail term for assaulting and insulting cop
Dubai: A housewife has been jailed for six months for assaulting a policeman and tearing his outfit after she was reported for disruptive behaviour and not paying her alcohol bill.
Dubai Police were notified about a drunk Moroccan woman who was damaging tables and chairs at a nightclub in Bur Dubai in October.
A police patrol was dispatched to the nightclub, and when a policeman asked her to calm down, the 45-year-old Moroccan housewife scolded and insulted the officer.
The policeman tried to talk to the defendant and make her pay for the liquor bill and leave the place peacefully, but she didn’t comply. She loudly said that she was married to an Emirati and insulted the policeman. She pushed the policeman and tore his uniform before he called for backup.
She assaulted and insulted several hotel staff who tried to help the policeman while she was wrecking the furniture.
The Moroccan was finally restrained and taken into custody once a policewoman arrived at the lobby.
On Sunday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of assaulting and insulting the policeman in public.
Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the accused will be deported after serving her six-month imprisonment.
The defendant is also being tried before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court for assaulting and cursing three of the hotel staff and drinking liquor.
The policeman said incident happened after the accused got drunk at the hotel.
“Hotel staff informed the police that she had been acting unruly and wrecking the place because she did not want to pay her bill. She had also refused to pay another bill at a restaurant in the same hotel, despite being granted a discount to avoid her shameful behaviour. I tried to calm her down and spoke to her in a friendly manner to avoid creating a scene. She turned more rowdy … when she insulted me and tore my uniform, I called for backup. We handcuffed her and put her in the police car,” he said.
A Filipina security guard said the accused was drunk and had wrecked the place.
The Moroccan accused was sentenced in absentia on Sunday.
